Frequently Asked Questions:

~ Will NST hurt?
No. It is a very gentle therapy that is quite relaxing.  Most clients report feeling as though they could fall asleep, as it is very calming to the nervous system.

~ How long will it take?
Most sessions require about 30 minutes.  However, if it is a 2nd or subsequent session, it may take less time.  If we are dealing with an acute injury or chronic pain and we need to move more slowly, then we'll take a bit more time.

~ How many NST sessions do I need per week and how many weeks or months will I need?
Not many!  In a comprehensive study on NST conducted in Italy, it was found that 85% of all participants in the study had their primary complaint resolved with only 1 - 3 sessions. 13% of participants needed 4 - 6 sessions to achieve those results while only 2% of participants needed more than that. In my clinical experience, there have actually been a few clients who were resolved after only 1 treatment and come back once every few months for a "tune up".  Most have needed 2 - 3 sessions for resolution of their complaint; and a few clients, who have congenital and/or chronic issues, report great relief with regular sessions once a month or bi-weekly. After those few sessions that bring you to balance, you may want to come back once in a while for a "tune up".  Or if you've spent the weekend moving furniture or doing some strenuous sport or activity that your body isn't accustomed to doing, a little NST is just the thing to rebalance your muscles and connective tissue so everything can get back in place and feel good again. There is no reason to plan for indefinite weekly treatment for the vast majority (98%) of clientele.

~ How many times will I need to do IM?
Interactive Metronome usually suggests 12 sessions as a general guideline.  In my own experience as an IM therapist over the past 4 years, I've seen many people achieve what they wanted to in fewer sessions.  There have also been clients who needed to move more slowly (because of their individual diagnoses) and have this ongoing for many weeks. It's very individual and depends upon the type of interference or impairment and the goals of that client.  A better estimate can be given after the initial assessment.

~ Do I have to sign a contract or commit to a certain number of IM sessions?
No, certainly not. This is all about what you want to achieve. We can make an educated guess at how many sessions to expect and if you accomplish what you want to in fewer sessions, so much the better!

~ Will insurance cover this?
In a word, no.  I am not set up for insurance, and I actually set out to provide IM specifically to make it available to people who have limited or no insurance. The billing for this therapy from many insurance-covered providers runs between $280 - $510 per session on average. Mercy Mountain Wellness is able to charge $60 per session to make it more affordable. This said, there are many wonderful, highly qualified IM providers all over the US and Canada who can bill insurance for you if you have a prescription for their services. If this is an option for you, I do recommend it.  You can find a listing of providers at www.interactivemetronome.com
